PREP ROUNDUP : Corona del Mar Routs Buena Park in Water Polo, 20-2

Brandon Howald scored five goals and Ryan Weirfour added four to lead Corona del Mar High School to a 20-2 victory over Buena Park in a Southern Section 4-A first-round water polo match Thursday at Newport Harbor High School.

Gunnar Gustafson added two goals and a strong defensive effort for Corona del Mar (25-3), which plays fourth-seeded Long Beach Wilson Tuesday in the quarterfinal round.

In other 4-A water polo:

El Dorado 17, Long Beach Poly 1--Matt MacLear had six goals, and Kyle Utsumi had four for El Dorado (24-3).

In 2-A water polo:

Kennedy 4, Mira Costa 2--Eric Ebell and Shawn Miyasaki scored two goals each for host Kennedy (17-7). Jeff Williams had 12 saves for Kennedy.

Villa Park 12, Fullerton 6--Gary Larson had five goals for host Villa Park (23-4).

In Southern Section 1-A girls’ tennis playoffs:

Western 17, Bellflower 1--Tami Galeai swept 6-0, 6-2, 6-0, to lead host Western (16-1).

La Quinta 11, La Sierra 7--Doubles team Linh Phi and Becky Phillips swept, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5, and Nhu Vu and Kristine Quan swept, 6-4, 6-1, 6-3, to lead host La Quinta (16-3).

In 2-A girls’ tennis:

Rosary 14, Hacienda Heights Wilson 4--Freshmen Mandy Gomez and Joyce Cruz swept their sets to lead visiting Rosary (16-4).

Katella 12, Sunny Hills 6--Lynn Vonusa swept her sets, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0, to lead host Katella (15-4). Alisha Michaels swept, 6-2, 6-3, 6-0, for Katella.

In 3-A girls’ tennis:

Laguna Hills 16, Villa Park 2--Laguna Hills (12-6) was led by Jenny Marques, who swept 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, at the Laguna Niguel Racquet Club.

Mission Viejo 11, West Torrance 7--The doubles team of Robin Erickson and Brandi Beougher swept 6-2, 6-2, 6-1, to lead visiting Mission Viejo (13-8).

In 4-A girls’ tennis:

Corona del Mar 17, Beverly Hills 1--Keri Phebus swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, to lead host Corona del Mar (19-1).

In Southern Section girls’ volleyball 5-A playoffs:

Capistrano Valley 3, Mater Dei 0--Host Capistrano Valley (16-3) swept, 15-7, 15-7, 15-10.

In the Small Schools Division:

Newport Christian 3, Western Valley Christian 0--Host Newport Christian won 15-6, 15-0, 15-9. at the 15th Street Gym in Newport Beach. Newport Christian is 15-1.
