TENNIS ROUNDUP : Lendl Extends His Streak Against Mayotte to 15

Ivan Lendl, the world’s top-ranked player, continued his mastery over Tim Mayotte with a 6-2, 6-2 victory Friday to set up a semifinal against Stefan Edberg in the $1-million Stockholm Open.

Lendl, playing in Stockholm for the first time since 1978, dominated Mayotte and ended the match with an ace before 13,084 fans at the Globe Arena.

It was Lendl’s 15th victory in 15 matches against Mayotte, who was seeded No. 7.

Edberg held off Jim Courier, joining fellow Swedes Magnus Gustafsson and Mats Wilander in the semifinals. Edberg, the No. 3 seeded player, beat Courier, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Wilander easily defeated Jan Gunnarsson, 6-3, 6-0.

Gustafsson, a wild-card entry, upset No. 4 seeded Andre Agassi, 6-2, 7-6, assuring Sweden of a berth in the final of the world’s oldest indoor Grand Prix tournament for the eighth consecutive year.

Martina Navratilova withdrew from a $250,000 tournament in Chicago because of a groin injury, but said she planned to play next week in New York.

Navratilova, the world’s No. 2 player, was trying to win her fifth consecutive title in the tournament and ninth since 1978. She had been scheduled to meet unseeded Larisa Savchenko of the Soviet Union in a quarterfinal match.

In other quarterfinal matches, Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria defeated Gretchen Magers, 6-1, 6-1; Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia beat Ann Henricksson, 6-4, 6-4, and Zina Garrison defeated Pam Shriver, 6-3, 6-0.

John McEnroe battled back after losing the first set to beat Miloslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, and reach the semifinals of a $440,000 tournament at Wembley, England.

The top-seeded McEnroe, beaten in his two previous meetings by Mecir, held on to win in 2 hours 20 minutes.

McEnroe was joined in the semifinals by Michael Chang, who beat Andrei Chesnokov of the Soviet Union, 6-3, 6-4. While two Americans made the final four, two others were defeated. Robert Seguso lost, 7-5, 6-3, to Frenchman Guy Forget, and unseeded Australian Wally Masur upset No. 3 seeded Brad Gilbert, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3.

Second-seeded Martin Jaite of Argentina defeated Brazil’s Luis Mattar, 6-4, 6-4, to advance to the semifinals of a $130,000 tournament at Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Fourth-seeded Javier Sanchez of Spain also reached the semifinals by battling to a 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 7-6 (7-4) victory over Marcelo Filippini of Uruguay.
