Attorneys for veteran cornerback Raymond Clayborn of the New England Patriots have filed for bankruptcy because his Texas real estate investments have gone bad.
Clayborn filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy action in federal court at Boston on Oct. 13. The court scheduled a conference of his creditors for Nov. 20.
Under Chapter 7 action, the court will liquidate his assets. The investments have left the 13-year veteran nearly $2 million in debt.
Clayborn, 34, is being paid a base salary of $900,000 this season, but $540,000 of it is deferred and much of the rest has been deferred in other investments.
Chapter 7 action includes a court order that bars creditors from trying to get at Clayborn’s personal property or his salary while a trustee decides what will be done with his assets. In addition to his financial problems, Clayborn suffered a thigh injury in last week’s game against the New York Jets that will keep him out of today’s game with New Orleans.
