EAST ROUNDUP : Finally, Columbia Wins One

Columbia quarterback Bruce Mayhew grew tired of seeing zeroes in the victory column every time he looked at the Lions’ record.

So he decided to do something about it.

Columbia won for the first time this season and the third time in 63 games as Mayhew threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, leading the Lions past Cornell, 25-19, in an Ivy League game at Cornell.

Columbia, 7-89-2 this decade, had not beaten Cornell since 1976. The Lions, 1-8 overall and 1-5 in the league, lost to Dartmouth, 13-12, last week on a field goal with 19 seconds left. Cornell (3-5 and 1-4) lost its fourth consecutive league game.

Mayhew, a junior, capped a 58-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, then connected with tight end Matt Less on a 36-yard touchdown pass play to give the Lions a 15-10 halftime lead.

West Virginia 21, Rutgers 20--Major Harris rushed for a season-high 160 yards and completed two touchdown passes to Reggie Rembert to lead the the No. 19 Mountaineers at Morgantown, W. Va.

Rembert finished with three catches for 81 yards for the Mountaineers (7-2-1).

Harris’ 160 yards topped his previous best of 135 yards last week against Penn State.

Syracuse 38, Navy 17--Michael Owens gained 159 yards in 20 carries, and Bill Scharr threw for two touchdowns as the Orangemen marked their 100th game under Coach Dick MacPherson with a victory at Annapolis, Md.

Syracuse (6-3) has beaten Navy seven consecutive seasons. The Orangemen are 57-41-2 under MacPherson.

Syracuse was not forced to punt until the middle of the fourth quarter, after the offensive starters had left with a 38-10 lead. Navy is 2-7.

Yale 14, Princeton 7--Chris Kouri scored on a one-yard run late in the third quarter, and defensive back Jim Parsons had a key interception at Princeton, N.J., to help the Elis clinch at least a tie for the Ivy League title.

Princeton’s last drive reached the Yale 42-yard line before Tiger quarterback Joel Sharp’s pass was intercepted by Parsons at the two-yard line with 12 seconds left.

Both teams entered the game with 5-0 league records. Princeton (6-2-1) was looking for its first league title in 20 years.

Boston College 24, Army 17--Fullback Ed Toner scored twice in the second half as the Eagles rallied behind quarterback Mark Kamphaus at West Point, N.Y.

Kamphaus guided two second-half touchdown drives for the Eagles (2-7). The Cadets dropped to 5-4.

Dartmouth 12, Brown 6--David Clark rushed for 202 yards in 30 carries to lead the Big Green at Hanover, N.H.

Clark’s rushing yardage, the second best in a game in Dartmouth history, helped him break Dartmouth’s single-season rushing mark of 787 yards set in 1970 by John Short. With one game left, Clark has 844 yards.

Harvard 24, Penn 15--Jim Reidy ran for 118 yards and two touchdowns, and the Crimson withstood a second half comeback at Cambridge, Mass.
