SOUTHWEST ROUNDUP : No. 10 Arkansas Holds Off Baylor

Freshman Todd Wright kicked four field goals and senior James Rouse topped 100 yards rushing for the third consecutive week as No. 10 Arkansas held off Baylor, 19-10, in a Southwest Conference game at Little Rock, Ark.

Wright’s 40-yard field goal with 2:56 left secured the victory and set up a conference title showdown on Friday, Nov. 24, against Texas A&M.; Rouse carried 28 times for 133 yards and a touchdown.

Wright’s 38-yard field goal broke a 7-7 tie and his 19-yarder snapped a 10-10 tie with 4:06 left in the third quarter. Wright, who has made 16 of 18 field goal attempts this season, made it 16-10 with a 21-yarder with 10:17 to go.

Arkansas is 8-1 overall and tied with Texas A&M; for first place in the SWC at 5-1. Neither team plays again until they meet Nov. 24 at College Station.

Baylor’s Brad Goebel was injured in the third quarter, and the Bears did little against the Arkansas defense with Ed Lovell at quarterback.

In the second half, Baylor (4-5 and 3-3) had the ball a total of seven minutes and gained 53 yards.

Wright’s second field goal came at the end of a 78-yard drive. Derek Russell got the Razorbacks started with 34 yards on a reverse behind a block by quarterback Quinn Grovey.

Russell’s run reached the Baylor 42 and Grovey completed a third-down pass to Billy Winston for 13 yards. Barry Foster ran for a first down, but Arkansas opted for a field goal on fourth and one from the two-yard line.

Jeff Ireland could have tied the score at 13, but his 55-yard field goal attempt hit the crossbar.

Houston 47, Texas 9--Manny Hazard caught two of Andre Ware’s four touchdown passes, setting an NCAA record with his 19th touchdown reception this season, to lead the 15th-ranked Cougars at Houston.

Hazard, who leads the nation with 118 catches, caught 19 passes for the second consecutive week. He gained 226 yards and moved closer to the college record of 134 receptions set by Tulsa’s Howard Twilley in 1965.

The Cougars led, 27-9, at the half on Ware’s touchdown pass plays of 18 and 31 yards to Kimble Anders and an 18-yarder to Hazard that tied the NCAA record set by San Diego State’s Tom Reynolds in 1969. Hazard broke the record in the third quarter with a seven-yard catch.

Ware broke conference records of 269 completions in a season, set by Rice’s Tommy Kramer in 1976, and the career yardage record of 7,179, set by Southern Methodist’s Chuck Hixson in 1968-70.

Ware has 292 completions this season and 7,327 career yards. He completed 27 of 49 passes for 411 yards on Saturday.

Houston improved to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in the conference. The Longhorns dropped to 4-4 and 3-2.

Texas Tech 37, Texas Christian 7--James Gray rushed for 209 yards in 19 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead the No. 23 Red Raiders at Lubbock, Tex.

Texas Tech, 7-2 overall and 4-2 in the SWC, kept alive its slim Cotton Bowl hopes. Texas Christian fell to 4-6 overall and 2-5 in the conference.

Jamie Gill threw first-half touchdown passes of five yards to Anthony Manyweather and 34 yards to Gray.
