Cross-Country, Volleyball Finals Today

High school cross-country championships for both boys and girls, and girls’ volleyball finals are scheduled today in the Southern Section and City.

At Mt. San Antonio College, beginning at 7:30 a.m., the Southern Section cross-country finals will feature Palos Verdes in the girls’ 4-A Division going for its fifth consecutive title and Maranatha shooting for its fourth consecutive title in the 1-A Division.

Camarillo is a solid favorite to win the 4-A boys title, but close contests can be expected in the 3-A between Newhall Hart and San Gabriel; in the 2-A between Arroyo Grande and Agoura; and in the 1-A between Whittier Christian and Long Beach St. Anthony.

The City cross-country finals are scheduled at Pierce College at 10 a.m. Taft, Belmont and Venice are the teams to watch in the boys’ race. In the girls’ race, Taft, Belmont, Birmingham and San Pedro are the title contenders.

In girls’ volleyball, Mira Costa of Manhattan Beach (22-0) and Corona del Mar of Newport Beach (22-1), widely regarded as the Nos. 1 and 2 teams in the nation, will meet tonight at 8:15 in the Southern Section 5-A final at Marina High in Huntington Beach.

Also at Marina High, Simi Valley Royal (18-1) will play Anaheim Esperanza (17-1) for the 4-A title at 6:15; La Habra (17-1) meets Agoura (15-3) for the 3-A championship at 3:30; top-seeded Palos Verdes Chadwick (18-0) plays Pasadena Mayfield (14-6), a wild-card entry, for the Small Schools championship at 1:30; and St. Anthony (20-0) plays Brentwood (17-0) in the 1-A final at 11:30 a.m.

At the Wooden Center on the UCLA campus, Palisades plays Chatsworth for the City 4-A title at 8 p.m., and Garfield meets Birmingham for the 3-A title at 5:30.
