COMMUNITY COLLEGE MEN’S BASKETBALL : Pauley Helps Cypress Ground Edwards Air Force

Eric Pauley scored 24 points and had nine rebounds to lead Cypress College to a 73-63 victory over Edwards Air Force Base Friday in a semifinal game of the Cypress Thoroughbred men’s basketball tournament.

Pauley, a 6-foot-9 freshman from Savanna High School, was 12 of 16 from the field and added six blocked shots.

Grayle Humphrey added 14 points and was three of three on three-point shots for Cypress (2-0), which lead, 35-30, at the half. Vince Hizon added nine points and Chris Bowen and Brian Kenny had eight points each for Cypress.

Cypress plays Ventura tonight at 8 p.m. for the title. Ventura scored a 75-73 victory over Glendale in the other semifinal game. Glendale and Edwards AFB play at 6 p.m. for third-place.

In the Rancho Santiago Tip-Off Tournament:

Rancho Santiago 104, College of the Desert 65--The Dons scored more than 100 points for the second consecutive game.

Matt Lien, a 6-foot-10 sophomore center, had a game-high 24 points. Gene Altamirano, a sophomore guard, had 17 points and Cory Blount added 12 for Rancho Santiago which led, 53-29, at the half. Rancho Santiago advances to play Chaffey tonight at 8 p.m. in the championship game. Desert plays Southwestern at 6 p.m. in the consolation championship.

In a nonconference game:

College of Southern Idaho 103, Golden West 83--Golden West got out to a 25-15 lead in the first 10 minutes, but then turned the ball or missed shots on the next eight times down the floor and Southern Idaho rallied to take the lead. Southern Idaho led, 47-32, at the half.

Alex Kreps scored 20 points and J.J. Jenkins had 19 for Golden West. Kreps fouled out with about five minutes left. Golden West is 2-1. Bill Williams had 18 points to lead Southern Idaho (1-0).

In the Fullerton tournament:

El Camino 84, El Camino 78--Host Fullerton led most of the way but went cold at the end and lost. Fullerton led, 78-72 with 2 1/2 minutes left but didn’t score again. El Camino (2-0) went on a 12-0 run to end the game.

Larry Lockley had 21 and Mike Houck had 17 for El Camino. Donell Henderson scored 21 and Rashone Lewis 20 for Fullerton which led, 42-32, at the half. Cerritos, the defending state champions plays El Camino tonight at 8 p.m. in the championship game. El Camino won the state title in 1988.

Fullerton plays San Bernardino at 6 p.m. in the third-place game.

South Mountain 90, Saddleback 77--Charles Lockard scored 20 points, but Saddleback (0-2) was eliminated.
