THE SIDELINES : Tyson Gets Holyfield Extension
The World Boxing Assn. announced today that heavyweight champion Myke Tyson has until June 12 to defend his title against Evander Holyfield.
The WBA also gave Puerto Rican lightweight champion Edwin Rosario until next March to fight Azumah Nelson of Ghana. Under WBA statutes, the deadline for the Rosario-Nelson bout was Nov. 9.
The Tyson-Holyfield match also is past deadline, but Tyson has signed a contract to fight James Douglas, ranked fourth by the WBA, on Feb. 12 in Tokyo.
Last week, during the WBA convention in Philadelphia, Holyfield’s manager filed a complaint against Tyson for the delay in the fight. But the WBA granted the special permission requested by Don King, promoter for the Tyson-Douglas fight, and extended the deadline.
