Aztecs Give Luginbill New Three-Year Contract

San Diego State football Coach Al Lungbill has agreed to a new three-year contract, Athletic Director Fred Miller announced Tuesday night.

The agreement extends through 1992. Miller gave no further details of the agreement in making the announcement at the football team’s annual awards banquet.

Luginbill’s old contract was also a three-year agreement that was to expire in 1991. Luginbill, in his first season as coach, led the Aztecs to a 6-5-1 record, Their first winning season in three years.

Also at the banquet, John Wesselman was named Most Valuable Player as well as special teams Player of the Year and outstanding defensive back.

Jim Jennings, a San Marcos High grad, was named Most Improved Player for his work on the offensive line. Jennings had been a fullback in high school and last year with the Aztecs.

Other recipients included: Joe Santos, most inspirational player; Roman Fortin, outstanding offensive lineman; quarterback Dan McGwire, outstanding offensive lineman; Sai Niu, outstanding linebacker and punter/defensive back Joe Santos, most inspirational.

Bob Wagner, who directed Hawaii to a 9-2 record (with a game remaining) and its first bowl did as a Western Athletic Conference member, was named 1989 WAC coach of the year. Air Force quarterback Dee Dowis was named the league’s offensive player of the year, Wyoming’s Mitch Donahue defensive player of the year and Hawaii’s Jamal Farmer Freshman of the year.

FIGURE SKATING John Baldwin Jr. of Mira Mesa surprised himself Tuesday by finishing first in compulsories at the World Junior Figure Skating Championships.

“I can’t say I expected to win the figures,” said Baldwin, 16. “I was really just hoping to skate well and get through them.”

He got through them well enough to win the first figure, a backward paragraph three version of a figure-8. Baldwin wasn’t as solid on the second figure, a forward outside change loop which usually is his best figure.

“I guess being first got me a little nervous,” he said. “But this feels great.”

MEN’S BASKETBALL Rob Meeter tied a Christian Heritage single-game record with 17 rebounds and led Heritage to a 101-84 victory over Point Loma Nazarene College.

Darvin Jackson connected on all 12 free throws he took in the second half and UCSD hit on 21 of 24 free throws as the Tritons (3-1) came from behind and toppled Claremont, 86-73. Jackson finished with 18 points.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Forward Shannon Abrams scored 16 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead Point Loma Nazarene over Occidental, 71-67, at PLNC.
