The 16-team Irvine girls’ basketball tournament begins today at University, Westminster and Woodbridge high schools.
The Times’ top preseason picks, No. 1 Brea-Olinda High School, featuring Aimee McDaniel, the Division III state player of the year, and No. 2 El Toro will compete in the tournament.
Brea and El Toro are on different ends of the draw, and if they meet in the final, it will give fans an answer to one of the most intriguing questions in county girls’ basketball this season: Can somebody in Orange County beat Brea-Olinda?
The early rounds of the tournament are today, Saturday and Monday. The semifinals are scheduled at 8:15 p.m. Tuesday at Westminster and University, and the final at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday at Woodbridge.
