At Least 9 Killed, 4 Injured in Weekend Violence; No Arrests Made

At least nine people were killed in weekend violence in the Los Angeles area, including a wounded man who apparently died in an Altadena garage after fleeing from the scene of a drive-by shooting.

Sheriff’s investigators Sunday sought witnesses to the fatal shooting of the 44-year-old Altadena man, whose body was discovered Friday evening by neighbors in a garage on West Royce Street.

“The victim and several others were apparently standing in front of that location about 9:30 (p.m.) Thursday when a car drove up and shot at the group,” said Deputy Bill Wehner.”

Members of the group scattered and the victim, shot in the chest, stumbled to the garage. Wehner said an autopsy would be performed to determine the cause of death. The victim’s name was being withheld pending notification of his family.

Detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department’s 77th Street Division reported that a man was shot to death shortly after 2:50 p.m. Sunday. Investigators had no other details.

Earlier in the day in Long Beach, Conrado Avila, 26, was shot to death by suspects who fired from a passing car, police said. Manuel Sandoval, 28, also of Long Beach, was wounded in the attack. Police said no suspects have been arrested.

A 25-year-old Los Angeles woman was shot to death during an argument early Sunday in Highland Park. Two men were wounded in the handgun assault. Police said the shooting apparently stemmed from an argument between a suspect and one of the wounded men.

In Compton, Brian Keith Green, 27, was found Saturday in a vacant lot with several gunshot wounds to the back. Green, of North Hollywood, was pronounced dead at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center. Witnesses told Compton police that Green had been chased by two men and that several shots were fired.

A Newton Division police spokesman said that Julio Alberto Ochoa, 19, was killed in a drive-by shooting in South Los Angeles shortly after midnight Saturday. A 16-year-old boy was wounded in the leg in the shooting and taken to California Hospital, police said.

In Hyde Park, Gregory Branch, 24, of Los Angeles, died after he was shot in the head as he sat in his parked car. No suspects have been arrested, police said.

A fisherman found the body of a youth in San Gabriel Canyon early Saturday. A sheriff’s deputy said the victim had been shot several times.

On Friday, David Guillen, 33, of Bell, was shot to death when he tried to intervene in a robbery. No suspects have been arrested.
