Virginia and Santa Clara played to a 1-1 tie after one hour of overtime Sunday at Piscataway, N.J., causing the first shared NCAA soccer championship in 21 years.

Drew Fallon scored for Virginia at 26:48 off Lyle Yorks’ corner kick. Santa Clara scored when Jeff Beicher beat Tony Meola, the goalkeeper for Virginia and the U.S. national team, with 6:23 left.

The first time there were NCAA co-champions in soccer was in 1968, between Maryland and Michigan State.
