Carson 59, Palos Verdes 56--Palos Verdes took its first lead with 2:32 left in the fourth quarter when Art Shell hit a short jumper to put the Sea Kings up, 54-53. But Carson grabbed the lead on its next possession when Tyrone Smith drove through the key for a layup. In the third quarter, Palos Verdes (1-1) had outscored Carson, 26-7, to pull within seven points of the Colts, 46-42.

In the first half Carson (3-1) took a 35-20 lead, many of the points set up by turnovers forced by the aggressive, full-court, man-to-man Carson defense.

After the first quarter Carson led, 23-13, when football star Michael Ross scored 10 points.

With 3:03 left in the second quarter and Carson leading, 35-20, Palos Verdes went into a stall for two minutes and five seconds. Andy Jacobson snuck behind the Carson defenders for an easy layup, but the basket still left the Sea Kings behind by 15.

Carson advances to the semifinals and will play Lakewood tonight.
