COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Valley Wins on Layup by DeLaittre

Shawn DeLaittre retrieved the ball after a missed free throw and scored on a layup with eight seconds left Wednesday to give visiting Valley College a 63-61 nonconference win over Mt. San Antonio.

Valley center Cliff Barnes had tied the score on a 10-foot jump shot with 12 seconds left and was fouled. He missed the free throw, setting the stage for DeLaittre, a former Simi Valley High standout who transfered to Valley from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Steve Ward led Valley (6-3) with 18 points, and DeLaittre scored 16. John Moses paced all scorers with 29 points. Mt. SAC dropped to 2-9.

In other games:

Cypress 65, Glendale 60--Undefeated Cypress capitalized on strong performances by forward Andre Lamoureux and center Eric Pauley to beat Glendale in the first round of the Golden West Invitational tournament.

Lamoureux scored 21 points and pulled down 14 rebounds. Pauley doled out eight assists from the high post and scored 12 points for Cypress (7-0).

Guard Bruce Heicke led Glendale (4-5) with 22 points.

WOMEN

Antelope Valley 62, Moorpark 60 (OT)--Anna Quiles hit two free throws with four seconds remaining in overtime to provide the margin of victory in a nonconference upset at Antelope Valley. The score was tied, 50-50, after regulation.

Moorpark had won seven of its first eight games. Cindy Wiles scored a game-high 22 points for the Lady Raiders.

Antelope Valley (2-5) was aided by Susan Hervey’s 16 points off the bench.

Canyons 91, Hancock 80--Tressie Millender scored 22 points, including two three-point baskets, and Dawn Coleman and Michelle Cabaldon each contributed 20 for Canyons (8-1). Coleman pulled down 11 rebounds and Millender grabbed 10 in the game at Hancock (5-1).
