Golf Coaches Hall of Fame to Induct Cullum

Bill Cullum, golf coach at Cal State Northridge for 23 years, will be inducted into the Golf Coaches Assn. of America Hall of Fame at the group’s convention in Orlando, Fla., Jan. 26.

His teams won National Collegiate Athletic Assn. Division II championships in 1969, ’73 and ’74 and had 12 top-five finishes and he coached 34 All-Americans, including Rex Caldwell and John McComish.

Cullum, who last coached the Matadors in 1986, was a nine-time California Collegiate Athletic Assn. Coach of the Year.

Steve Smith, a former St. Genevieve High baseball player, has been hired by the Texas Rangers to manage their double-A affiliate in Oklahoma City. Smith was a coach last season for Las Vegas of the triple-A Pacific Coast League. His brother, Scott, is basketball and baseball coach at St. Genevieve.

Harvard High goalie Larry Bercutt and Royal driver Devin Hurst were selected as members of the All-Southern Section 3-A Division water polo team. Both are seniors.

Junior Brian Border, a Harvard driver, was named to the second team, and freshman Jim Toring was a third-team member for the Saracens. Crespi goaltender Tim Behrens, a junior, also was selected to the third team.

In the 2-A, Agoura junior Kevin Driscoll was named to the second team and teammate Jason Stelle, also a junior, was a third-team selection.

Craig Ellis, a former Poly High standout, capped a successful return to professional football by being named to the Canadian Football League All-Star Team in voting conducted by the Football Reporters of Canada.

Ellis, a slotback with the Edmonton Eskimos, was the CFL’s third-leading receiver this season with 80 catches.

Ellis, 28, signed with the Eskimos as a free agent in March after a nearly two-year absence from football. His only playing experience during those years came during three replacement games with the Raiders during the 1987 players strike and three exhibition games with the Dallas Cowboys in 1988. Ellis also played parts of five seasons with five CFL teams and 10 games with the Miami Dolphins in 1986.

John Worden of West Hills will attend the U. S. Cycling Federation’s national team winter camp in Colorado Springs, Colo., which begins today and runs through Dec. 23.

The two-week camp will include cross-country skiing, swimming, weightlifting, running and other cross-training. Worden, a time-trial and distance racer, was selected for the invitation-only camp by coaches of the national team.
