PLNC Women Set Record in 107-33 Victory

The Point Loma Nazarene College women’s basketball team set a school scoring record in a 107-33 victory at Dominican Saturday.

Freshman Carrie Carambas, who played at Mira Mesa High School, led the Crusaders (4-1) by coming off the bench to score 24 points. PLNC broke the record it set in a 90-52 victory over Whittier Friday.

Camille Armijo scored 15, and Shannon Abrams added 16 for PLNC, which led 58-16 at halftime.

Paula Mascari scored 16 points, and Candida Echeverria added 11 to lead the University of San Diego to a 70-65 victory at UC Santa Barbara.

GOLF

Kemp Richardson of Laguna Nigel and Craig Anderson of Fallbrook, both of whom played golf at USC, finished one-two at the 1990 Shearson Lehman Hutton Open Amateur Qualifying Tournament at Torrey Pines Golf Course. Both are eligible to play in the $900,000 professional tournament at Torrey Pines, Feb. 13-18.

Richardson, a stockbroker, easily won the 120-player tournament with a four-under-par 68. Anderson, a contractor, shot 72.

Bob Imlay, the baseball coach at Patrick Henry, was tied with two others at 73. Pat Duncan of Rancho Santa Fe and and Phil Mickelson of San Diego, who had qualified for previous tournaments, shot 74.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Brad Soucie scored 20 points and Will Cunningham added 18 to lead Christian Heritage to a 112-91 victory over visiting Biola (4-6). Mark Kraatz had 12 points and Rundy Foster added 11 for Christian Heritage (5-3), which led 55-31 at halftime.

John Greer scored 18 points off the bench but it wasn’t enough as Whittier defeated host Point Loma Nazarene, 86-78. Tom Hubbard had 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Mike Flores added 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Crusaders (1-5).

SOFTBALL

Lin Adams, the UC San Diego softball coach, resigned to become head coach at Chico State, an NCAA Division II school.

Adams was co-coach at UCSD for two years, teaming with Lisa Bassi, who resigned this past summer to take the head-coaching job at Fullerton Community College. Adams and Bassi led UCSD to the NCAA Division III West Regionals twice.
