Ex-Socker is Considered as Assistant

Erich Geyer, who played 4 1/2 seasons with the Sockers from 1981-85, interviewed with Socker President Ron Cady Tuesday afternoon for the assistant coach position vacated by Keith Weller, named coach of the Tacoma Stars Dec. 5.

Geyer, 39, coached the Chicago Sting for 77 games between 1986-88. He will meet with Socker coach Ron Newman today.

“I think it was a very positive meeting,” Geyer said. “I know most of the players. When you know the environment, it’s always fun to come back if you can.”

The Sockers are apparently considering two options; promoting a player or hiring outside the organization. The leading player candidate would undoubtedly be midfielder Brian Quinn, who has coached the reserve team since Weller’s departure.

“I think he should be considered,” Newman said. “Quinny’s got the knowledge and the background.”

If Quinn were chosen, road games would present a problem. When the team travels the assistant is needed in San Diego to coach the reserve team and train injured players. Hiring Quinn as assistant and naming Geyer--or another outside candidate--to coach the reserve team would be a possible solution.

Another likely candidate outside the organization is former Wichita Wing Norman Piper, who Weller was selected over last season.
