A Newport Beach woman was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder Wednesday after she allegedly ran down a relative with her car in a Costa Mesa residential area and fled, police said.

Betty Young Davies, 58, surrendered at the Costa Mesa police station at about 3:30 p.m. and was being held in lieu of $75,000 bail, officers said.

Davies ran her car into James Ward, 31, of Costa Mesa on Tuesday night after an argument, police said. He was thrown onto the car, shattering its windshield. Police declined to say how the two are related.

The incident occurred in the 800 block of Congress Street after the two had walked to the parked car discussing family problems, Police Capt. Thomas Lazar said.

Ward suffered major head injuries and was taken to Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, where he was reported in critical condition after surgery.
