HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Patrick Henry Reaches Final, Will Play Poway

The Patrick Henry boys’ basketball team, which held a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter, lost much of it but still managed to hold off Serra, 52-48, in the third round of the Kiwanis Tournament at Serra Wednesday night.

Patrick Henry will play Poway, a 43-41 winner over Point Loma Wednesday, for the championship tonight at 8:15 at Serra.

Butch Reese and John Pike both scored 17 points for Patrick Henry.

Serra (4-3) was led by Rodrick Alexander with 15 points and Desi Dixon with 14.

In other Kiwanis Tournament championship bracket games:

Lincoln 86, Monte Vista 51--No. 4 Lincoln had four players in double-figure scoring. Darryl McMillan led the way with 20 points, Victor Dean added 17, Ken Garner 13 and John McCartney 12. Joe McNaull had 15 points for No. 6 Monte Vista, which played for the third consecutive game without Jeff Polinsky, who is out with the flu. The Hornets outscored Monte Vista in every quarter.

University City 67, Hoover 54--Ray Hooper scored 17 points, Anthony Hill 16, and Jerome Price 10 for University City (8-1), which will play Lincoln at Serra today for fifth place.

Consolation Bracket

Valhalla 67, El Capitan 50--Valhalla, led by Tony Lee’s 13 points, took a 31-16 halftime lead. Jason Lynch and Tory Temple each scored nine points, and Temple had 10 rebounds for Valhalla,, which will play Mt. Miguel in today’s consolation final.

Mt. Miguel 79, Madison 59--Mt. Miguel, which jumped to a 45-25 halftime lead, was led by Shannon Lafever with 27 points. Teammate Chris Ezquibel added 18. John McKenna scored 26 for Madison.

La Jolla 55, Mission Bay 53--The teams were tied, 33-33, at halftime, and La Jolla led by only one point going into the final quarter. Justin Chaitin and Serge Aftandelian scored 15 points and 10 points for La Jolla, which will play Helix today at Serra.

Helix 57, Southwest 48--Helix was led by Lloyd Lake with 13 points and Henry Lundy with 10. Darren Davis scored 14 points, and Joe Cruz scored 10 for Southwest.

Coco Cola/Sweetwater Tournament

San Diego 85, Mar Vista 42--San Diego continued to build on a 48-16 halftime lead. Clark James scored 35 points for No. 2 San Diego.

Sweetwater 91, Granite Hills 44--Carlos Campbell scored 19 and Joe McDowell scored 17 for No. 5 Sweetwater. Sweetwater led, 30-10, after the first quarter.

Las Vegas Holiday Tournament

Mt. Carmel 83, Lanier (Tex.) 56--Bill Wootton scored 21 points, and Shane Knight scored 19 to lead Mt. Carmel, which pulled away with 29 points in the fourth quarter. Albert Burditt led Lanier with 22 points. Mt. Carmel is 3-2.

Championship Bracket

Point Loma 55, Fallbrook 26--No. 1 Point Loma jumped to a 32-8 halftime lead. The Pointers were led by 6-foot senior center Tyeast Brown with 18 points and senior forward Ericka Crittenden with 15. Robin Rabello had 10 rebounds for Point Loma (7-0). Point Loma will play El Cajon Valley tonight at 7:15 at Point Loma. El Cajon advanced by defeating Torrey Pines, 65-33.

Poway 75, Rancho Buena Vista 59--Allison Brady scored 26 and Christi Fortney scored 22 to lead No. 2 Poway. Rancho Buena Vista was led by Stephanie Howells and Shawna Edge who each scored 16.

Consolation Bracket

Serra 30, Mission Bay 28--Pamm Ross scored 15 points and had 16 rebounds to lead Serra. Mission Bay was led Lara Foley with 12 points. Serra led, 11-9, at halftime.

San Dieguito 69, Patrick Henry 45--San Dieguito, led by Connie Lucas with 25 points and 14 rebounds, took a 32-16 halftime lead. Tammy Kotnik scored 17 points for Patrick Henry.
