SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

If Karee Bonde is the heart of the Palmdale High girls’ basketball team, then Kim Schielke and Nicole Coupland provide the pulse.

Bonde, an All-Southern Section second-team pick and the Golden League MVP a year ago, had an off-game offensively Tuesday night, but Schielke and Coupland picked up the slack to lead Palmdale to a 57-30 win over Bakersfield Foothill in the championship quarterfinals of the Thousand Oaks tournament.

Palmdale will meet Thousand Oaks, a 60-39 winner over Cabrillo, at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Bonde, a 5-foot-8 senior forward, scored 21 points in last week’s first-round win over Hueneme but made just two of 10 shots against Foothill (4-3) and finished with six points.

“When it’s a good, close, hard game, that’s when Bonde takes over,” Palmdale Coach George Corisis said. “But her shooting was off tonight.”

But Schielke and Coupland were on.

Schielke, a freshman, scored 11 of her 15 points in the first period as Palmdale (10-2) jumped to a 13-3 lead. She was six of eight from the field.

Coupland, a senior forward, took over in the second half, scoring 12 of her game-high 18 points as Palmdale won going away. Coupland, who hit eight of 12 shots, also pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.

In other championship quarterfinal games:

Westlake 56, Camarillo 49--Junior Dani O’Byrne scored 21 of her game-high 27 points in the first half and Westlake limited Camarillo to five points in the fourth quarter to advance to the semifinals.

Westlake will meet Channel Islands, a 70-49 winner over Sacred Heart, at 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

O’Byrne (four points) and Melissa Gische (five) scored nine of Westlake’s 11 fourth-quarter points as the Warriors pulled away after leading by a point after three periods.
