TODAY’S HIGHLIGHTS

NONCONFERENCE

WINTHROP COLLEGE (7-1) at U.S. INTERNATIONAL (4-9), 7:30

Radio--KVSD (1000).

USIU, which was cooled considerably by a 91-88 loss to previously winless Colgate Saturday, plays host to a hot Winthrop team at Golden Hall. USIU found out that two players aren’t enough, even against a team as weak as Colgate; guards Steve Smith (19 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists) and Kevin Bradshaw (32 points) were the only ones who showed up to play. The Gulls will need much more than that against Winthrop, which has only lost to South Carolina and is coming off a 91-74 victory over South Carolina State. The Eagles are led by 5-foot-11 guard Shaun Wise, who averages 19.6 points per game. The Gulls are led by Bradshaw (29.7 points) and Smith and Demetrius Laffitte (16 each). USIU entered the Colgate game having beaten a solid Eastern Washington team but then lost any of that momentum.

WESTERN KENTUCKY (3-6) at UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO (3-7), 7:30

A team in a season-long shooting funk, USD made a season low 32% of its attempts in an 88-69 loss to Nevada Reno last Thursday. The Toreros’ 49 missed shots equaled UNR’s total attempts. For the season, USD guards Wayman Strickland (32% from the field), Gylan Dottin (37%) and Pat Holbert (39%) are shooting a combined 36%. Western Kentucky comes to the USD Sports Center, having lost two in a row--to Louisville, 75-64, and St. Louis, 77-65. Members of the Sun Belt Conference, WKU defeated USD, 64-59, last year in Bowling Green in their first meeting. Senior guard Roland Shelton (19.1 average) leads the Hilltoppers. John Jerome, the high scorer in eight of 10 USD games, is averaging 19.8.
