THE SIDELINES : Gallacher Named Squad Captain

SUTTON COLDFIELD, England —
Bernard Gallacher was named today as the non-playing captain of Europe’s Ryder Cup squad, succeeding Tony Jacklin, who retired after leading his team to three straight titles.
The European team will attempt to retain the trophy against the United States at Kiawah Island, S.C., in September, 1991.
The 40-year-old Gallacher had been Jacklin’s assistant for three series. Jacklin insisted that the Scot be the man to succeed him.
