HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : On Balance, Buena Advances

Buena High put together a balanced scoring attack along with a tough 2-3 zone defense to lead the Bulldogs past an outmanned Camarillo team for a 62-53 victory Thursday night in a championship semifinal game of the Ventura-Kiwanis basketball tournament at Ventura High.

Buena (6-4), the defending tournament champion, was led by 6-foot-6 center Darren Schearer (22 points) and guard Jeff Oliver (18). Four Bulldog players scored in double figures.

Guard David Harbour was the sole effective weapon for Camarillo (8-3), scoring a game-high 26 points.

Buena controlled the boards, outrebounding the Scorpions, 28-21.

Buena will meet Oxnard in the championship game at 8 tonight.

In other tournament games:

Oxnard 59, Newbury Park 50--Trailing by two entering the fourth quarter, Oxnard outscored Newbury Park, 21-10, to advance to the final.

Rubin Bryant and Kenyon Lewis each had 14 points for Oxnard (6-5). Guard Tim Lane scored a game-high 15 points for Newbury Park (6-4).

Newbury Park will play Camarillo for third place at 6:30 tonight.

Ventura 67, Channel Islands 60--Forward Kevin Kiech scored a game-high 26 points and guard Kevin Williams added 22 to lead the Cougars (3-7) in a consolation semifinal game.

Kenji Kato scored 23 points and fellow forward Mario Durmiendo added 16 for Channel Islands (6-4).

Thousand Oaks 72, Nordhoff 60--Forward Dusty Lysobey scored a game-high 22 points and forward Chris Loll added 15 to send Thousand Oaks (5-5) into tonight’s consolation championship game against Ventura.

BIRMINGHAM TOURNAMENT

Grant 66, Reseda 59--Keith Weinstein scored a game-high 16 points to lead Grant into the tournament final against Kennedy.

Setro Terzian scored 12 points for Grant (10-2). Marquis Wilborn and Mike Basowski each scored 14 points for Reseda (3-5).

Kennedy 70, Birmingham 54--Garret Anderson and Josh Ettings each scored 19 points to lead Kennedy (5-5) into the final against Grant tonight at 8:45.

Anthony McCombs had 14 points for Birmingham (2-5).

Canoga Park 65, Monroe 63--Marcus Reed scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Hunters (6-7) into the consolation championship.

Poly 87, Sherman Oaks CES 53--Behind Jason Wilson’s game-high 22 points, Poly (1-9) recorded its first win of the season in a consolation semifinal game.

MT. CARMEL TOURNAMENT

Poway 77, Burroughs 76--Marnie Calderon scored 22 points and teammate Doug Castaneda scored 19 for Burroughs (5-4) in a championship semifinal loss at Mt. Carmel High in San Diego.

LA SALLE TOURNAMENT

Faith Baptist 73, Village Christian 66--Faith Baptist advanced to the consolation championship behind Fernando Garcia’s game-high 24 points and 11 rebounds. Peter Rasmussen added 23 points, 13 rebounds and six steals for Faith Baptist (5-5).

COAST CHRISTMAS CLASSIC

Hoover 71, Vista 67--John Hillman scored 22 points to lead Hoover (3-6) into the consolation semifinals at Estancia High.

UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY TOURNAMENT

Westlake 88, Calgary Bishop Grandin 71--John Van Spyk scored 27 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and added six steals as Westlake rolled to a first-round win in Calgary. David Monheim scored 19 points and added six assists for the Warriors (5-4).

LAS VEGAS VALLEY TOURNAMENT

Royal 84, Verbum Dei 71--Russell Myers scored a game-high 28 points to lead Royal (8-3) in a consolation quarterfinal game at Las Vegas Valley High.

MALIBU/PALISADES TOURNAMENT

Hamilton 75, Crespi 67--Despite a game-high 29 points from junior guard Rasaan Hall, Crespi fell in the consolation championship game at Pepperdine University.

EAGLE ROCK TOURNAMENT

Sylmar 60, Huntington Park 46--Senior swingman Donovan Wallace scored a game-high 20 points and added 10 rebounds to lead Sylmar into the consolation final.

David Elliott came off the bench to score 17 points for the Spartans (6-5).

BIRMINGHAM GIRLS’ TOURNAMENT

Kennedy 54, Sylmar 49--Kennedy was able to counter a 35-point, 17-rebound performance by Sylmar’s Katina Mines to advance to the championship game against Jordan today.

GAHR GIRLS’ TOURNAMENT

Alemany 46, North Hollywood 35--Stephanie Contreras scored a team-high 13 points and teammate Tori McCormick added 11 to lead Alemany (8-5) in a fifth-place semifinal game at Gahr High.

GIRLS’ NONLEAGUE

Simi Valley 58, Agoura 46--Junior guard Lori Church scored a game-high 25 points and had 15 rebounds, eight steals and four assists to lead the Pioneers (7-5) in a nonleague game at Simi Valley.
