Pepperdine Falls to Boston University

Steven Key put Boston University ahead with two free throws with 34 seconds remaining and the Terriers beat Pepperdine, 64-61, Friday in the consolation semifinal game of the Far West tournament.

Key, who had 10 of his 14 points in the second half, put the Terriers ahead, 62-61, after Pepperdine’s Geoff Lear had put the Waves ahead, 61-60, on two free throws with 43 seconds left.

David King had 21 points and Sotiris Manolopoulos had 16, 11 in the first half, for Boston University (3-6), which broke a three-game losing streak.

Lear led Pepperdine (4-5) with 14 points, seven in a 15-1 run in the final nine minutes of the game when the Waves overcame an 11-point deficit.

The Terriers broke out of a 41-41 tie with a 14-3 run, capped by King’s 10-foot jumper and two free throws by Manolopoulos, for a 55-44 lead with 10:15 left.

The Waves then scored 10 consecutive points, six on free throws by Lear, to cut the deficit to 55-54 with 5:42 remaining.

A tip-in and a five-foot jumper by Steve Guild put Pepperdine ahead, 59-56, with 3:39 left. Bill Bingham’s rebound basket and King’s jumper at 1:41 put the Terriers back in the lead before Lear gave Pepperdine its final lead of the game.
