Mayor to Honor American Legion World Champions

Mayor Tom Bradley will present the members of the Woodland Hills West American Legion team with a commendation today, honoring the team for winning the world series last summer.

Bradley will present the proclamation to the team at El Camino Real High at 2:45 p.m. The West team was composed of players from El Camino Real and Canoga Park highs.

Woodland Hills West, the only team from the Valley’s District 20 to win the national championship, defeated Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, 11-5, in the championship game in Millington, Tenn.

The proclamation, which lists every player and coach on the team, singles out El Camino Real graduates Del Marine and Carl McFadden, who won individual trophies for their performances in the national tournament.

Eugene Humphrey, a starting guard on the Cal State Northridge basketball team, is expected to miss tonight’s game against Biola because of a bruised right thigh and a sore back.

Humphrey, averaging 9.4 points and 3.5 assists a game, did not play in the second half of Saturday’s loss at Sacramento State after sustaining the thigh injury in the first half. He injured his back two days earlier when he was the victim in a hit-and-run auto accident.

Freshman Bill Mazurie will start in place of Humphrey, who is also questionable for Friday’s game at Southern Utah State.
