THE SIDELINES : Coghlan to Race Indoors Again
Eamonn Coghlan, the world indoor record-holder in the mile and the world outdoor champion at 5,000 meters in 1983, said today he is returning to indoor competition.
The often-injured Coghlan, 37, announced his retirement in December, 1988, after suffering a hairline fracture of the right leg, superficial bruises of the left arm, and neck and back injuries in an auto accident.
At the time, he ruled out running competitively during the outdoor season but suggested he might return indoors. Today, he said he is “definitely” retired from outdoor track but will resume his elite indoor schedule Feb. 2 in the Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden.
He also said he would compete in the Meadowlands Invitational at East Rutherford, N.J., Feb. 9, the Los Angeles Times Games Feb. 16 and the Mobil Indoor Championships at the Garden Feb. 23.
