Newbery Medal to Lowry for Children’s Book

Author Lois Lowry has won the prestigious John Newbery Medal for children’s books, while illustrator Ed Young was awarded the Randolph Caldecott Medal.

The awards were announced Monday at an American Library Assn. meeting.

Lowry, author of “Number the Stars,” won the 1990 Newbery Medal for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children published in 1989.

Young, illustrator of “Lon Po Po: A Red-Riding Hood Story from China,” won the Caldecott for the most distinguished American picture book published last year.

The awards are administered by the Assn. for Library Service to Children, a division of the library association.
