WOMEN’S BASKETBALL : Big Run Helps Long Beach Win

Cal State Long Beach went on an 18-8 run in the last seven minutes of the first half to take control of the game and went on to easily beat Pacific, 90-70, in a Big West Conference game Saturday night at Long Beach.

Guard Dana Wilkerson scored seven of her 20 points during the run. Center Angie Lee scored 19 points and had 14 rebounds for the ninth-ranked 49ers, who are 10-3 overall and 3-1 in the Big West.

Pacific (6-6, 1-3) got a game-high 24 points from center Julie Szukalski. Tiger guard Tina Friel had 16 assists to break the Big West record of 15 set by Penny Toler of Long Beach against San Jose State on Jan. 22, 1987.

UCLA 82, Arizona 70--Freshman guard Nicole Anderson made five of six free-throw attempts in the final 1:30 to help the Bruins win the Pacific 10 game at Tucson.

Anderson, who made 11 of 14 free throws in the game, scored 17 points. The Bruins, who have won four in a row--all on the road--are 8-5 overall and 3-0 in the Pac-10. Arizona is 8-7 and 1-3.

USC 82, Arizona State 78--Tammy Story missed a layup after stealing the ball from the Sun Devils’ Karen O’Connor with 15 seconds left in overtime and the Trojans ahead, 81-78. But Story, who led the Trojans with 21 points, made a free throw a few seconds later to clinch the Pacific 10 win at Tempe, Ariz.
