COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Chapman Gets Hot Early, Holds Off Cal Poly Pomona
Chapman College, which shot 74% from the field while building a 16-point halftime lead Saturday, held off host Cal Poly Pomona for a 63-56 victory, its first in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. this season.
Pomona (7-8 overall and 1-1 in conference) got back into the game thanks to forward Terry Ross, who finished with a game-high 25 points and 11 rebounds. Chapman is 9-6, 1-1.
Pomona closed the gap to three with 1:56 left when Ken Scalmanini hit a three-pointer to make it 55-52. But Chapman was able to control the game in the final 90 seconds for the victory.
In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s basketball:
Westmont 85, Southern California College 77--Rick Witmer had 18 points and Mike Henjum and Terry Skruggs each scored 13 for Southern California College.
Christ College Irvine 76, Azusa Pacific 75--Bert Gay hit a three-pointer with two seconds left for the victory at Christ College Irvine (9-11, 1-1).
In California Coastal Conference men’s basketball:
Pacific Christian College 121, California Christian 74--Brian Kaiser had 28 points to lead Pacific Christian College (11-8, 6-0) at Fresno.
In Big West Conference women’s basketball:
Fresno State 63, UC Irvine 55--Kathy Lizarraga had 15 points before fouling out for visiting Irvine (1-12, 0-4).
San Diego State 71, Cal State Fullerton 68--Kathy Werth had 22 points and Genia Miller 15 for visiting Fullerton (6-8, 1-4).
In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. women’s basketball:
Cal Poly Pomona 80, Chapman 63--Nikki Bracken’s 33 points led host Cal Poly Pomona. Bethel Trice’s 18 points topped Chapman (12-5, 0-2).
In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball:
Biola 65, Southern California College 59--Kristen Bevis and Nora Menken scored 15 each for host Southern California Christian.
In nonconference men’s swimming:
UC Irvine 161, Cal State Long Beach 84--Brian Judd won the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute 42.67 seconds and the 500-yard freestyle (4:40.92) and Brian Carey won the one-meter and three-meter diving events to lead visiting Irvine (5-1).
In nonconference women’s swimming:
Cal State Long Beach 139, UC Irvine 104--Debbie Babashoff won the 200 freestyle (1:58.3) and the 500 freestyle (5:11.64) for visiting Irvine (3-3).
In nonconference wrestling:
Minnesota 31, Cal State Fullerton 9--Fullerton (3-6) won only two of 10 matches at Minneapolis. Dan Henderson won a major decision, 11-0, over Matt Olson in the 167-pound weight class and teammate Ramon Diaz won a 13-9 decision in the 190-pound division over Brad Gibson.
In the National Collegiate Tennis tournament at the Shadow Mountain Resort in Palm Desert:
The second-seeded team of Trevor Kronemann and Shige Kanroji from UC Irvine defeated Dan DeBoer and Conny Falk of Miami, 6-2, 6-3, to advance to the semifinals.
In another quarterfinal, Byron Black and Kent Seton of USC defeated Richard Lubner and Aaron Stolpman of UC Irvine, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.
Kronemann and Kanroji will play Mark Knowles and Billy Barber of UCLA in a semifinal at 10 a.m. today.
