GOLF ROUNDUP : Playing at Home, Gamez Wins Easily

With his veteran opponents unable to apply any pressure, rookie Robert Gamez, playing on his home course, eased his way to a four-stroke victory Sunday in the $900,000 Tucson Open.

The 21-year-old Gamez had a final round of two-under-par 70 to become the first player since Ben Crenshaw in 1973 to win in his first start as a member of the PGA Tour. He won $162,000.

Gamez, who passed up his final year at the University of Arizona to turn professional, won with a 270 total, 18 shots under par.

Australian Rodger Davis eagled the second playoff hole to beat Curtis Strange and win a $625,000 tournament at Brisbane, Australia.

They tied at 17-under-par 271 after the final round. Davis closed with a 69, and Strange shot a 72. Strange missed a 13-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole that would have given him the victory.
