Andy Coviello, a 5-foot-11, 210-pound outside linebacker from Sacramento City College, has signed a letter of intent to attend San Diego State, according to Sacramento CC Coach Jeff Tisdell. Coviello was the player of the year in the Camino Norte Conference.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Point guard Michelle Miles, who led UCLA in assists last season, will transfer to San Diego State this month, sources said.

Miles, a 5-foot-9 redshirt sophomore from Denver, had 87 assists and averaged 4.1 points in 26 games for the Bruins last season. But she lost her starting job this season to Nicole Anderson, formerly of La Jolla High School. She left the Bruins after a Dec. 22 game against Notre Dame. She had 22 assists and averaged 0.4 points in eight games.

Under NCAA transfer rules, Miles must sit out the rest of this season and will not be eligible to play for the Aztecs until mid-December. She will have 1 1/2 seasons of athletic eligibility remaining.

Simone Srubek had a game-high 23 points as Fresno State defeated visiting San Diego State, 83-69, in a Big West Conference game.

Crystal Lee led SDSU (2-13, 1-3) with 21 points and Julie Evans had 19. Fresno State is 12-3 and 5-0.

Kathleen Alvarez scored 20 points to lead host UC San Diego to a 72-63 nonconference victory against LaVerne. It was UCSD’s sixth consecutive victory.

Sophomore forward Cari Young had 15 points and 17 rebounds for UCSD (9-5), and Bernadette Diepenbrock had 10 points.

La Verne is 8-6.

Camille Armijo had a game-high 25 points but it wasn’t enough as host Azusa Pacific defeated visiting Point Loma Nazarene in a Golden State Athletic Conference game. Amy Walter scored 24 for Azusa Pacific (12-4, 2-1).

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Brad Soucie scored 25 points and Mark Kraatz added 24 points as Christian Heritage defeated Grand Canyon (Ariz.), 91-89, in a nonconference game at Grossmont College.

It was Christian Heritage’s first victory in seven games against the 1987-88 NAIA National Champions, and the Hawks’ eighth consecutive victory at home. Christian Heritage (14-4) also snapped Grand Canyon’s seven-game winning streak.

Andre Edwards led Grand Canyon (13-7) with 24 points.

Point Loma Nazarene did not score until Ron Hubbard hit a jump shot with 14:11 remaining in the first half as the Crusaders trailed 15-2 and could never get closer than nine points midway through the second half as host Azusa Pacific coasted to an 82-71 Golden State Athletic Conference victory.
