COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Hoyas, Playing on Fear, Rip Boston College

Georgetown Coach John Thompson vented his anger on his players Wednesday night, and they in turn took it out on Boston College.

With Thompson badgering them from the sideline, the No. 2 Hoyas (14-0, 4-0) limited Boston College (6-9, 4-5) to 18 first-half points at Georgetown en route to a 68-45 Big East Conference victory.

Dikembe Mutombo scored 12 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, and Mark Tillmon scored 17 for Georgetown.

Boston College (6-9, 0-5) made seven of 24 shots in the first half in dropping its fifth consecutive game and eighth in its last nine.

North Carolina 79, No. 8 Duke 60--Intense defense and Rick Fox’s 19 points led the Tar Heels to a victory over the Blue Devils (12-3, 3-1) in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Chapel Hill, N.C.

The Tar Heels (12-6, 2-1) applied pressure from baseline to baseline, forcing 15 Duke turnovers in the first half--seven by freshman Bobby Hurley.

King Rice scored 13 points for North Carolina. Pete Chilcutt scored 12 points and reserve Hubert Davis had 10.

No. 12 Arkansas 80, Southern Methodist 61--The Razorbacks scored the game’s first 11 points and coasted to a Southwest Conference victory at Dallas.

Arkansas (13-3 overall, 5-0 in the SWC) was led by Todd Day’s 17 points.

No. 24 Purdue 56, Wisconsin 54--Tony Jones scored 10 points during a late 12-4 run at Madison, Wis., as the Boilermakers (12-2, 4-0) rolled to their 25th consecutive victory against the Badgers (10-7, 1-4).

Jones, who finished with 23 points, scored the Boilermakers’ final 12 points.

Danny Jones scored 18 points and Patrick Tompkins added a season-high 16 for Wisconsin.

Mississippi 80, Auburn 72--Forward Gerald Glass scored 28 points and had 10 rebounds in an SEC game at Oxford, Miss.

Auburn’s Ronnie Battle’s 15 points led four Tigers in double figures.

Mississippi is 5-9 and 2-3. Alabama is 4-11 and 1-4.

DePaul 73, Niagara 58--David Booth scored 24 points and the Blue Demons made a 22-2 run closing the first half and opening the second to roll to victory at Rosemont, Ill.

The Blue Demons (9-8) scored the last 10 points of the first half and opened the second half with a 12-2 run to rout the Purple Eagles (3-13).

Kentucky 82, No. 25 Alabama 65--Reggie Hanson scored 20 points and sparked a second-half spurt that led the hot-shooting Wildcats over the Crimson Tide at Lexington, Ky.

Kentucky (7-8, 3-3), also got 19 points from Deron Feldhaus.

Georgia 83, Mississippi State 69--Litterial Green scored 24 points, including two three-point baskets, to lead the Bulldogs at Athens, Ga.

Georgia, 10-4 overall and 3-2 in conference, broke open a close game in the first half with six consecutive points, four by Green. Cameron Burns scored 28 points for Mississippi State (8-6, 1-5).

Tennessee 80, Florida 75--Carlus Groves scored 15 second-half points and keyed a game-ending spurt that enabled the Volunteers (9-5, 4-1) to overcome poor shooting and 25 turnovers to defeat the Gators (6-6, 2-3) in a Southeastern Conference game at Gainesville, Fla.
