HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Mt. Carmel Nears Record With 132

Mt. Carmel came within four points of tying the section record for most points scored in a game by a boys’ basketball team when it defeated Orange Glen, 132-58, at home Wednesday night.

Sweetwater holds the record, 136 in a 1988 victory over Coronado (48). Mt. Carmel passed the 130 scored by Sweetwater in a victory over Montgomery (51) in 1981.

The previous high for Mt. Carmel was 116 in 1979 against El Camino.

Seven players for Mt. Carmel had season highs and eight were in double figures.

Those in double figures were: Tom LaBuda, 23, Shane Knight, 17, Ryan Wootton, 17, Bill Landry, 16, Jason Beeman, 16, Mike Graves, 16, Matt Castillo, 12 and Jon Young, 11.

Mt. Carmel improved to 13-3, 5-0 in Palomar League play, and Orange Glen fell to 0-12, 0-5.

In other Palomar League games:

San Dieguito 68, Poway 66--Sean Howard scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Brian Malewicz had 18 points and 11 rebounds for San Dieguito (7-8, 2-3) in its upset of fourth-ranked Poway (11-3, 2-3).

Fallbrook 54, Rancho Buena Vista 48 OT--RBV (7-7, 3-2) led, 30-16, midway through the third quarter but Fallbrook came back to tie, 44-44, at the end of regulation. A three-pointer by Alan Chatman helped Fallbrook (13-4, 4-1) to the overtime victory. Chatman finished with 14 points, five in overtime. Chris Miller led Fallbrook with 16. Daryl Parker scored 20 for RBV.

Torrey Pines 84, Vista 75--Vista set a section record with 30 three-point attempts but made only seven.

The Panthers are 3-10, 0-5. Bill Scheibe led Torrey Pines (16-2, 4-1) with 23 points.

Avocado League

Oceanside 68, Ramona 63--Jerry Garrett scored 26 points and dished out nine assists as Oceanside upset host Ramona.

Oceanside (8-8, 2-2) was also helped by forward D.J. Lewis, who scored 14 of his 15 points in the second half. Alfonso De La Nuez paced Ramona (10-3, 3-2) with 27.

San Pasqual 86, Carlsbad 56--Center Erik Meek scored 26 points as ninth-ranked San Pasqual (10, 3-1) led by 31 after three quarters. Calvin Coleman paced Carlsbad (4-10, 1-3) with 21.

Escondido 69, San Marcos 47--Damian Cephas scored 12 points and grabbed as many rebounds to lead Escondido (4-8, 2-3).

City Central League

Lincoln 82, Crawford 70--Crawford (12-5, 0-1) trailed by just nine at half but was unable get the ball over half court for the first four minutes of the third quarter and was outscored, 12-0. Andre Garner led Lincoln (11-8, 2-0) with 28 points. Zeb Hill scored 17 for Crawford.

San Diego 82, Hoover 48--Clark James, the county’s second-leading scorer, added 37 points to his total to lead the Cavers. He also grabbed 15 rebounds. Mike Watson finished with 18 rebounds and seven points for San Diego (10-2, 2-0). The victory, coupled with that of Lincoln, set up an early game for first in the league. The two favorites meet Friday at Lincoln.

City Eastern League

Point Loma 58, Serra 49--J.J. Stokes scored a game-high 22 points for Point Loma (7-9, 1-1). Desi Dixon paced Serra (6-6, 0-1) with 16.

Patrick Henry 54, Morse 52--With 18 seconds remaining, Morse fouled and Ross Edwards made two free throws to win it for Patrick Henry (14-3, 2-0). Edwards and Butch Reese each finished with 12 points. Morse (10-7, 0-2) was led by Darnell Cherry with 19 points.

City Harbor League

Christian 79, Marian Catholic 55--Tony Clark scored 49 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked four shots for Christian (7-7, 2-0). Marian is 7-7 and 0-2.

City Western League

University City 60, Mission Bay 51--Jerome Price scored 14 points and Anthony Hill added 13 to lead fifth-ranked University City (15-1, 2-1). Jebel Anderson had 17 points and nine rebounds for Mission Bay (2-10, 0-1).

USDHS 68, La Jolla 51--Peter Ellis scored 23 points as University of San Diego High (8-4, 2-0) won its seventh consecutive game. La Jolla is 3-11, 0-2.

Metro League

Sweetwater 61, Bonita Vista 32--John Gilbert led second-ranked Sweetwater (17-1, 6-0) with 14, and Mendel Nafarrete added 11.

Southwest 68, Mar Vista--Devin Patterson scored 21 for Southwest (6-13, 2-5). Southwest led, 30-25, at halftime. Mar Vista dropped to 2-15, 1-6.

Castle Park 73, Montgomery 65--Lamont Bowens scored 17 and Brad Grady and Tony Thompson each added 16 for Castle Park 7-9, 4-3. Leslie Shaw scored 24 for Montgomery (2-13, 0-7).

Nonleague

Kearny 68, Clairemont 53--Darnay Scott scored a game-high 25 for Kearny (11-6), which led by one at half but outscored Clairemont, 15-7, in the third. Alex Love led Clairemont with 17.

Mira Mesa 69, Madison 67--Mark Ziegler scored 14 and J.J. Rowlett added 12 for No. 8 Mira Mesa (11-5). Mira Mesa led, 55-40, going into the fourth quarter, then held off a Madison rally. John McKenna led Madison (1-16) with 26 points.

Girls

City Central League

San Diego 66, Hoover 28--Melanie Covey, a 20-plus points-per game scorer a year a go, got her shooting touch back in her second game after sitting out several weeks with an ankle injury and scored 23. San Diego improved to 7-7, 2-0.

Lincoln 56, Crawford 27--DaShiela Dixon scored 26 points for Lincoln (12-4, 2-0). Crawford dropped to 8-6, 1-1.

City Eastern League

Point Loma 60, Serra 40--Erica Crittenden scored a game-high 28 points for second-ranked Point Loma (15-3, 2-0). Serra fell to (9-7, 0-1).

Patrick Henry 34, Morse 30--Tammy Kotnick led the way with 13 points. Mary Ann Ladley had 12 rebounds for Patrick Henry (14-3, 2-0).

University City 33, Mission Bay 27--Forward Tamika Edwards scored 14 points to lead University City (9-2, 2-0).

USDHS 56, La Jolla 14--USDHS had 11 players in score, but Amy Seidlinger was the only Don in double figures with 26 points and 14 rebounds. USDHS is 8-2.

City Harbor League

Christian 80, Marian Catholic 60--Tiffany Stutz scored 24 and Stacey Patsko had 22 points for Christian (1-0, 6-6). Marian (2-0, 5-8) was led by Adanya Guevara with 15 points. Georgette Esperanza had 25 rebounds.

Our Lady of Peace 56, Coronado 35--Tammy Tavarez scored 12 points for No. 9 OLP (1-0, 11-3). OLP led at halftime, 31-18. Coronado dropped to 0-1, 6-7.

Nonleague

Kearny 52, Clairemont 26--Jackie Diego scored 17 and Shelly Krause added 15 for Kearny (13-5, 0-1).

Madison 48, Mira Mesa 34--Christina Dawson led Madison (5-7) with 19 points. Teammate Jill Weeks had 18 rebounds.
