The San Francisco Giants have signed free-agent veteran catcher Gary Carter to a one-year contract, the club announced.
Carter, 35, is an 11-time All-Star selection and a career .265 hitter with 304 home runs in 15 major league seasons, but he had a poor season last year.
Carter hit just .183 with two home runs and 15 runs batted in while playing in a career-low 50 games for the New York Mets. He was sidelined for much of the season because of an injured right knee.
The contract will pay Carter $250,000 guaranteed, $250,000 if he is on the opening-day roster, and $100,000 for playing in 50 games. He gets an additional $100,000 for playing in 60, 70, 80, 90 and 110 games.
