HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Granada Hills Topples Taft in Overtime

Granada Hills High posted its second consecutive overtime victory Wednesday as the Highlanders rallied to defeat Taft, 75-68, in a North Valley League game at Granada Hills.

The Highlanders (14-7, 5-1 in league play), winners of six in a row and eight of their past nine, trailed, 60-52, with 2 minutes 36 seconds to play in regulation.

Granada Hills, however, ignited a rally with a three-point shot by Osiris Nalls and consecutive steals on inbounds passes by guard Jermoine Brantley that led to two quick baskets.

Brantley, who scored a team-high 22 points, was held scoreless in overtime. But Nalls scored five points in overtime and Jerry Allen added four as the Highlanders outscored Taft, 10-3.

Center Jason Deyoe, hampered recently by a bruised left knee, scored a game-high 27 points for Taft (13-7, 3-3).

In other boys’ games:

North Hollywood 81, Van Nuys 51--Senior center Dana Jones led all scorers with 28 points and had 15 rebounds and seven blocks for North Hollywood (17-2, 5-1). Forward Harry Marks scored 13 points and guard Robert Hill scored 11.

For Van Nuys (2-15, 1-5), junior center Michael Crawford scored a team-high 11 points.

Grant 80, Sylmar 60--Senior guard Keith Weinstein scored 19 points and reserve center Brunell Mori added 12 as the visiting Lancers (16-3, 6-0) kept rolling in East Valley League play.

Keith Bright scored 17 points and David Elliott added 15 for Sylmar (2-4 in league play).

San Fernando 64, Chatsworth 60 (OT)--With two seconds to play, Chatsworth’s Craig Hewitt tied the Northwest Valley League game with a free throw, but visiting San Fernando outscored the Chancellors, 6-2, in overtime.

Reseda 85, Monroe 50--Reseda, which trailed by as many as nine points in the second quarter, switched from a 2-3 zone defense to man-to-man coverage and took a 37-33 halftime advantage.

The Regents (8-8, 4-2) blitzed Monroe, 30-11, in the third quarter to seal a Mid-Valley League victory. Mike Basowski led all scorers with 24 points, including four of Reseda’s five three-point baskets.

Franklin 96, Sherman Oaks CES 50--Despite Cleve McWright’s 20 points and 12 rebounds in a Northern League game, Sherman Oaks (6-13, 2-6) fell victim to Franklin’s eight three-point baskets.

Royal 85, Newbury Park 77--Forward Russell Myers led Royal with a game-high 34 points and had 10 rebounds as the first-place Highlanders (17-4, 6-1) moved a half-game ahead of idle Westlake in the Marmonte League.

Chris Moriarity added 15 points for Royal. Ryan Turner and Chris Falzone each scored 19 points for Newbury Park (6-12, 0-7).

Camarillo 75, Thousand Oaks 59--Junior guard David Harbour scored 33 points and had a career-high 16 rebounds to lead the Scorpions in a Marmonte League game.

Rick Schnell added 24 points, including five three-point baskets, for Camarillo (13-6, 4-3).

Simi Valley 75, Channel Islands 67--Center Mike Wawryk (25 points) and guard Steve Carnes (22) led visiting Simi Valley (13-7, 5-2) in a Marmonte League game.

Moorpark 57, Carpinteria 53--Moorpark point guard Brian Lester had 21 points and 10 assists in the Tri-Valley League game.

Oak Park 68, St. Bonaventure 62--Senior forward Josh Atkinson scored 20 points for Oak Park (8-10, 2-3) in the Tri-Valley League game.

GIRLS

Grant 57, Sylmar 44--Trailing, 13-8, after the first quarter, Grant (6-4, 4-2) grabbed a 17-13 lead on three consecutive three-point shots by guard Karla Parade.

Taft 64, Granada Hills 56--Colleen Pratt of Taft and Karen Berkowitz of Granada Hills each scored 20 points.

El Camino Real 50, Cleveland 44--Cathy Ballint and Angela Rich shared team-high scoring honors with 13 points to pace the Conquistadores (10-4, 6-0).

Canoga Park 59, San Fernando 46--The Hunters’ Caryl Lee and San Fernando’s Bernie Samaniego tied for game-high honors with 14 points.
