From Staff and Wire Reports

Outfielder Darryl Strawberry of the New York Mets was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon early Friday morning after allegedly threatening his wife with a pistol, authorities said Monday.

He posted $12,000 bail and has since been released, police said.

A police statement issued Monday said West Valley station officers were called to Strawberry’s Encino home at 3:45 a.m. Friday after a report of “domestic violence.” Lisa Strawberry, 25, said she and her husband argued and Darryl, 27, hit her in the face with an open hand, the statement said.

According to the report, Lisa grabbed a metal rod and hit Strawberry in the ribs and wrist. Lisa alleged Strawberry got a handgun and threatened her, the report said.

A .25-caliber semiautomatic pistol registered to Lisa was found in the house, police said. The statement said Lisa showed “no visible injury” and that Strawberry had bruises on ribcage and wrist.

Met spokesman Jay Horwitz said charges have been dropped, but police would not confirm that.

“I don’t know whether she’d dropped the charges or not,” LAPD Cmdr. William Booth said Monday night. “I know that they were back together. He bailed out and they were back together right away.”

Two days before his arrest, Strawberry was involved in a paternity case in Missouri, where blood tests established he is the father of a child born in 1988 to a woman in St. Louis. Strawberry did not contest the finding and will pay child support.
