COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Ninth-Inning Single Sinks Cal State Fullerton

Steve Solomon singled home the winning run in the ninth inning as Stanford defeated Cal State Fullerton, 8-7, in a nonconference baseball game Sunday to complete a three-game sweep at Stanford.

Fullerton’s Phil Nevin hit a three-run homer in the top of the fourth to tie the score, 7-7.

Aaron Dorlarque (1-0) got the victory for the third-ranked Cardinal (8-0). Matt Watson (0-1) took the loss for the Titans (1-3).

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Arizona State 6, UC Irvine 3--The Anteaters, the ninth-ranked team in the nation, fell to the unranked Sun Devils in Tempe, Ariz.

“We’ve been leading kind of a nice privileged life,” Irvine Coach Greg Patton said. “I knew sometime it would catch up with us. Hopefully, it won’t happen (again) for about three more years.”

Shige Kanroji had five match points before ASU’s Dan Marting rallied to win, 7-6, 3-6, 7-5, at No. 3 singles. Kanroji and Trevor Kronemann lost to Brian Gyetko and Dave Lomicky, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, at No. 1 doubles.

Kronemann and Aaron Stolpman were the only singles winners for Irvine (2-1). Stolpman and Richard Lubner were the Anteaters’ only doubles winners.

In nonconference women’s gymnastics:

Cal State Fullerton’s Heather Thomas tied a meet record with a 9.80 on the uneven parallel bars, but the Titans finished third among four teams in a meet at Lincoln, Neb. Thomas also finished fourth in the all-around with a score of 37.95. The Titans (3-4), the sixth-ranked team in the nation, compiled 187.65 points, finishing behind second-ranked Nebraska (190.05) and No. 9 UCLA (189.40) but ahead of Washington (184.80).
