In an attempt to prod the NCAA toward leniency, the University of Maryland has offered to sit out the NCAA and NIT tournaments, the Washington Post reported.

The school also has turned itself in to the NCAA and Atlantic Coast Conference for Coach Gary Williams and his staff observing informal workouts before the mandatory Oct. 15 beginning of preseason practice.

The Terrapins would have to win about six of their remaining nine games to be considered for an at-large berth in the NCAA’s 64-team tournament. Winning the Atlantic Coast Conference postseason tournament would earn Maryland an automatic bid.

University officials also offered to forfeit the school’s share of revenue from the Terrapins’ 1988 NCAA tournament appearance and to reduce scholarships, the newspaper said.

The NCAA is expected to send its report to Maryland in the next two to four weeks.
