John McEnroe breezed past Italian Davis Cup player Paolo Cane, 6-4, 6-1, Thursday night to earn a quarterfinal berth in an indoor tournament at Milan, Italy.

McEnroe, who had received a warning during a previous match in Milan for disputing line calls, was unusually calm.

“He’s always polite when he wins easily,” said Cane, who gave Italy a 3-2 Davis Cup victory over Sweden by defeating Mats Wilander in the singles final Monday.

Joey Rive of West Palm Beach, Fla., ranked No. 142 in the world, advanced to the quarterfinals of a $250,000 tournament at San Francisco by beating 70th-ranked Lawson Duncan of Asheville, N.C., 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Earlier in the week, Rive defeated Kevin Curren.
