Here’s How Area Teams Stand

A look at how the Long Beach-Southeast area high school teams are doing in the Southern Section basketball playoffs, played Tuesday night. Second-round games are Friday night.

In 5-AA, top-ranked Lynwood (27-1) got 36 points from Earnest Killum and defeated Arcadia, 104-72. The Knights will play at Alhambra (20-5) in the second round.

Dante Powell scored 23 points to lead Millikan (20-7) to an 88-73 victory over Hemet. The Rams will play host to Saddleback (17-11) Friday in a rematch of last year’s championship game.

Poly (22-2) defeated Santa Monica, 71-52, as Rod Hannibal scored 18 points. Poly advances to play at Eisenhower (18-9).

Center Terrence O’Kelley scored 25 points to lead Lakewood (16-10) over Palmdale, 69-61. The Lancers will play at Leuzinger (17-9) Friday.

St. Anthony lost to Leuzinger, 65-58, and finished the season 15-6. Jordan (10-16) lost to St. Monica, 65-58, and El Rancho (15-9) lost to Alhambra, 57-43.

In 5-A, Cerritos (21-5) won at Esperanza, 75-69, as Mark Flick scored 19 points and Scott Day scored 18. The Dons will play host to No. 1 Mater Dei (26-1) Friday night.

In 4-AA, top-ranked Dominguez (20-5) defeated St. John Bosco, 65-46. Michael Whittiker scored 13 points for the Dons, who play host to Rosemead (14-9) in the second round. Bosco finished 9-16.

Second-seeded Compton, with Curtis Thomas scoring 29 points, downed Torrance, 99-91, to move into the second round for a home game against California. The Tarbabes are 19-6.

California (18-6) edged Gahr, 72-71, on a jump shot by Paul White with five seconds to play. Whittier (19-6) beat Arlington, 79-56, and will play at Bishop Amat (15-11) in the second round.

In 4-A, top-ranked Artesia (21-2), which did not play Tuesday, will play host to La Puente (13-11) in the second round.

La Mirada (17-8) defeated Santa Fe, 74-71, behind Brian Tiller’s 17 points. The Matadors advance to a second-round game at home against Palm Desert (12-11).

Poor shooting hurt Norwalk as the Lancers (10-14) lost to Bishop Montgomery, 68-50.

In 3-AA, Centennial beat Savanna, 60-53. The Apaches, who got 15 points from Charles Newman, will play at Foothill (18-6) Friday.

Glenn lost to Rolling Hills, 100-72, and finished 5-17.

In 3-A, St. Paul, led by Edgar Diaz’s 21 points, defeated Costa Mesa, 85-79. The Swordsmen (7-15) will play at Corona del Mar (16-9).

Bellflower (9-13) lost at home to South Pasadena, 59-45.

Mayfair finished the season 0-23 with a 90-45 loss at St. Bernard.

In 2-AA, Pius X (3-18) rolled past Salesian, 104-69, and will play at Santa Clara (20-0). Rod Titus scored 25 points for the Warriors.

In 2-A, Cantwell (13-9) defeated Oak Park, 59-51, and will play at Valley Christian (19-5).

In 1-A, Brethren (16-8) broke Hesperia Christian’s 80-game home winning streak with a 65-52 victory. Chris Beck scored 18 for Brethren, which will play host to Bishop Diego (15-8).

And in Small Schools, Gethsemane Baptist of Long Beach lost to Avalon, 71-45, and finished 14-6.
