Police came upon a cache of money, guns, stolen equipment and drug paraphernalia Tuesday when they responded to a report of an explosion in the 7600 block of Flanders Drive in Mira Mesa, officials said.

The “explosion” turned out to be three to four shotgun blasts fired from the house at two men as they approached the front door, said Bill Robinson, spokesman for San Diego police.

When police arrived shortly before 11 p.m. the occupants let the officers in and told them that they had fired the shots because they believed the two men were going to rob them.

Once inside, the officers saw several car stereos, three shotguns, an Uzi submachine gun, a semiautomatic rifle and narcotics weighing and packaging equipment, Robinson said.

After obtaining a search warrant, the police also found more than $100,000 in stolen property including VCRs, video cameras, television sets, pagers, compact disc players and record players, Robinson said. Inside a safe they found $13,500 in cash, a .22-caliber pistol, a hand grenade, a half ounce of liquid phencyclidine (PCP) and a half ounce of marijuana, Robinson said.

A 17-year-old girl was questioned and released, but her 14-month-old son was taken to the Hillcrest Receiving Home, a county care facility for abused children. Police said the environment in which the child lived constituted child abuse.

The police booked Curtis Guzman, 26, on suspicion of child abuse, possession of stolen property, possession of controlled substances with intent to sell, possession of a destructive device and possession of weapons. He was held in County Jail on $40,000 bail.

A second suspect, John Rodriguez, 19, was booked on suspicion of possessing stolen property and possessing altered articles. He was also being held at County Jail, under $5,250 bail.
