HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER PLAYOFFS : Top-Ranked Torrey Pines Opens With a Big Victory

Top-ranked and defending section champion Torrey Pines set the tone early and walloped Chula Vista, 8-0, in the first round of the San Diego Section girls’ 3-A playoffs.

Danielle Napoli scored 32 seconds into the match and the Falcons were on their way to an easy victory. Napoli, Ashley Hanson and Layla Nassiroghli had two goals each. Hanson also had two assists.

GIRLS’ 3-A

Rancho Buena Vista 1, Serra 0--Sarah Carling’s lob from 25 yards out with 10 seconds remaining in overtime gave RBV the victory at Serra.

San Dieguito 4, Hilltop 0--The Mustangs controlled the game and divided their scoring, two goals in each half. San Dieguito, upset by Poway in the semifinals last year, improved to 14-5-4 and will play Rancho Buena Vista Saturday at 11 a.m. at home.

Patrick Henry 2, Monte Vista 1 (2 OT)--Monte Vista’s Brenda Dollero and Patrick Henry’s Jessica Houck each scored for a 1-1 halftime score. With 30 seconds remaining, Patrick Henry had a penalty kick but Monte Vista goalkeeper Amy Bonocorsi made a save to force the game into overtime. In the second overtime, Terra Philby scored on a direct kick from 18 yards out for Patrick Henry with 13 minutes remaining.

Granite Hills 4, Point Loma 1--Granite Hills scored three goals in the second half breaking a 1-1 tie. Tiffany Walkenhorst scored one goal and assisted on two others for Granite Hills. Other goals were scored by Kelly Barnes, Beth Gower and Jackie Boehm of Granite Hills.

GIRLS’ 2-A

Grossmont 7, Bishop’s 3--Allyson Heinrichs and Mindy Cady scored two goals apiece for Grossmont, which led, 3-0, at the half. Carmel Murphy scored twice for Bishop’s.

BOYS’ 2-A Valhalla 1, Escondido 0--Four-time defending champion and top-seeded Valhalla came one step closer to a fifth title. Three minutes into the game, Ian Saward scored on a header from a throw in.

Mission Bay 6, El Cajon Valley 1--Fourth-seeded Mission Bay led at the half, 3-1. Aaron Susi scored two goals for the Buccaneers, who will play San Pasqual/St. Augustine Saturday at 11 a.m. at Mission Bay. The Bucs lost to Valhalla in the quarterfinals last year.

Madison 2, El Camino 0--Phong Le and Keg Parker scored two first-half goals for Madison.
