COLLEGE ROUNDUP : DeLaveaga Held to 10 in 104-83 CLU Loss

Friday night, for the first time this season, Cal Lutheran guard Jeff deLaveaga did not lead the Kingsmen in scoring. And in a 104-83 loss to Southern California College (22-8) in a nonconference NAIA District 3 game in Costa Mesa, Cal Lutheran could have used the sophomore’s point production.

DeLaveaga scored just 10 points in extending his streak in double figures to 26 games. Mike Demeter led Cal Lutheran (5-21) with 16 points.

BASEBALL

Rio Hondo 17, Moorpark 11 (10 innings)--Mike Suarez was three for four with a double, including a three-run homer, and drove in four runs for Moorpark (5-4).

But the Raiders allowed two runs in the ninth inning that tied the score, 10-10, then gave up another seven in the 10th. Moorpark’s Don Smith was three for five with a solo home run.

Santa Monica 12, Pierce 2--The Corsairs banged out 12 hits and took advantage of four Brahma errors to win a second-round game of the Mt. SAC tournament.

Ted Dorensbourg scattered two hits in five innings to pick up the win, while three relievers combined to allow three hits over the final four innings.

Pierce 21, Chaffey 7--Damon Lantz, Vince Simili and Jim Wolf each drove in four runs as the Brahmas breezed in a first-round game of the Mt. SAC tournament.

Chris Murphy (3-2) allowed seven hits and four runs over seven innings.

MEN’S SWIMMING

Santa Monica 53, Pierce 36--Brice Johnson (500-yard freestyle) and Cary Flebbe (200 breast stroke) were the lone winners for Pierce in a Western State Conference dual-meet opener at Santa Monica.

Valley 56, Canyons 48--Valley was led in a WSC opener at Canyons by Mike Lucero, who won three events, and Anton Petriccia, who swam a leg on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay and won two individual races. Petriccia also won the 200 individual medley and the 200 backstroke.

Lucero won the 1,000 freestyle, the 200 butterfly and 200 breaststroke.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING

Santa Monica 70, Pierce 47--Kathi Taguchi, Andrea Entin and Michelle Kirk won events for Pierce in a WSC dual-meet opener at Santa Monica.

Taguchi took the 200 individual medley, Entin won the 200 freestyle and Kirk took the 100 backstroke.

Valley 78, Canyons 30--Kisa Kirkpatrick and Ashley Watier each won three events for Valley in a WSC opener at Canyons.

Kirkpatrick won the 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly and the 100 individual medley. Watier took the 50 backstroke, 100 backstroke and 200 individual medley.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Cal State Northridge 5, Air Force Academy 4--Cathy Teobaldi won at No. 1 singles then combined with Allison Kincaid to win at No. 1 doubles and assure CSUN of a first-round victory in the Colorado Springs Indoor Tournament.

CSUN improved to 3-1 despite losing two of three doubles matches.

Cal Lutheran 7, La Verne 2--Joey Dooley shut out La Verne’s Emma Kaywi, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles, and the Regals had little difficulty in a nonconference match at La Verne.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Pierce d. Grossmont, 12-15, 15-6, 15-10, 15-9--Pierce battled back behind middle blocker Tony Zapata, who had 19 kills in a South Coast Conference match at Pierce.
