UCSD’s Eaton Pitches No-Hitter in Tournament

Dann Eaton pitched a no-hitter in UC San Diego’s 4-0 victory Friday over Western New Mexico (2-2) in the second round of the Southern California College Tournament in Costa Mesa.

Eaton, who struck out the last five batters, had 12 strikeouts and two walks. UCSD is 3-4.

Sophomore Ernie Isola hit a home run in the ninth inning to break a scoreless tie.

Tony Moeder scored on Devin Bundy’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the University of San Diego a 6-5 West Coast Conference victory over San Francisco. The Dons (4-10-1, 1-6) apparently tied it in the ninth, but pinch-runner Pete Colombo was called out for missing third base attempting to score from second.

Former Mt. Carmel High pitcher Tom Cheek (3-0) won in relief. Jim Alexander was three for three for USD (5-6, 2-2).

A four-run ninth inning sparked visiting New Orleans to a 5-4 victory over San Diego State at Smith Field. The loss snapped the Aztecs’ seven-game winning streak.

New Orleans’ Darrin Glenn led off the ninth with a home run, and Guy Lofton drove in the winning run with a two-run triple.

For SDSU (8-2), Eric Christopherson was four for four with a double and an RBI, and Brian Grebeck was two for three with a home run. New Orleans improved to 7-1.

Point Loma Nazarene (3-4-1) took a two-run lead after the first inning but failed to score again, losing to visiting Cal State Los Angeles, 7-2.

WOMEN’S DIVING

UCLA freshman Kristen Walls, a two-time section diving champion from Monte Vista, finished second in the one-meter springboard at the Pacific 10 Conference championships. Walls, who qualified for the NCAA championships in Austin, Tex., March 15-17, finished with 409.85 points to 410.65 by senior Katie Conners of Stanford.

TENNIS

The No. 16 USD women took the top four singles matches and all three doubles in downing Fresno State, 7-2, at USD.

No. 17 San Diego State’s women (3-4) won just two sets, losing, 9-0, to No. 1 Stanford in Palo Alto. The Cardinal improved to 8-0.

U.S. International’s men (6-5) lost just one singles match in a 5-1 victory over visiting Cal Lutheran.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal State San Bernardino (23-3) extended its winning streak to 22 with an 81-64 nonconference victory against UCSD at Triton Gym. For UCSD (13-11), Kathleen Alvarez had 14 points and Lisa Beaver 12 points and 11 rebounds.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Tim Rapp was selected to the All-West Region Division III first team by the the National Assn. of Basketball Coaches. Rapp, a 6-foot-4 junior guard, is averaging 23.1 points and 5.3 rebounds.

SOFTBALL

Minnesota (5-4) shut out U.S. International, 4-0, on the first day of the round-robin Fresno State Tournament. The Gulls (6-10) play No. 2 Fresno State today.

TRACK AND FIELD

Goshu Tadese won both the 800 meters in 2 minutes 3.54 seconds and the 5,000 meters in 15:41 as the Point Loma Nazarene men’s team defeated Azusa Pacific, 62-88, in its opening meet. PLNC’s women tied Azusa Pacific, 68-68.
