CLU Women to Meet Biola in Semifinals

Cal Lutheran, led by senior guard Brenda Lee, will play at Biola College in a semifinal game of the NAIA District 3 women’s basketball playoffs at 7:30 tonight.

The Regals advanced by defeating Azusa Pacific, 77-63, in the first round of the playoffs Monday night.

Lee, Cal Lutheran’s all-time leading rebounder, scored a career-high 28 points in the win.

The winner of the Cal Lutheran-Biola game will play the winner of tonight’s Fresno Pacific-Cal Baptist contest in the District 3 championship at Whittier College on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Valley College guard Andre Harrell was named the player of the year in the Western State Conference and is under consideration for a roster position for the inaugural North-South California Community College Basketball All-Star Game on March 10.

Harrell, a 6-foot-2 sophomore, averaged 15.4 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.1 assists a game for Western State Conference champion Valley.

Nominees for the all-star game include conference players of the year as well as several at-large picks. Moorpark center Greg Taylor is among the additional nominees, according to Moorpark Coach Al Nordquist, as is Antelope Valley center Steve Walker.

The all-star game will be played at UC Irvine’s Bren Events Center at 5 p.m.

The Harvard Water Polo Foundation team will play an exhibition match against Yugoslavia’s Patizan club Friday at 8 p.m. at Newport Harbor High. The touring Yugoslav team includes players from the national squad that won gold medals in the 1984 and ’88 Olympics, according to foundation team Coach Rich Corso, who also coaches at Harvard.

The Harvard club team includes U. S. national team members Jeff Chase, Kirk Everist, Robert Lynn and Alex Russeau. The Yugoslav and U. S. teams will train together at USC.
