An East San Diego man was arrested Wednesday night in connection with several armed robberies at motels countywide, police said.

Exton Hullaby, 36, is being held at County Jail in lieu of $15,000 bail on suspicion of armed robbery and parole violation.

Police spokesman Bill Robinson said an off-duty police officer, James Tucker, saw Hullaby about 8 p.m. Wednesday driving a maroon Lincoln Continental that fit the description of the car used in several of the robberies.

Since December, at least 23 robberies in what police labeled the “Motel Knife and Gun Series” have taken place in San Diego, El Cajon, Chula Vista, Clairemont, Carlsbad and Lemon Grove, Sgt. Reggie Frank said.

The robber went to the motels’ front offices and ordered the victims to lie down, then stole money from the offices.
