PREP ROUNDUP : Ponce Pitches University to Softball Title

Michele Ponce pitched a two hitter, allowing only an unearned run in the fifth inning, as University High School defeated Western, 7-1, in the championship game of the Fullerton softball tournament Saturday.

Shareen Patton had three hits and scored a run for University and pitched a no-hitter in the Trojans’ 5-0 semifinal victory over Fullerton. Patton was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

In another Fullerton softball tournament game:

Villa Park 8, Magnolia 6--Jamie Franco doubled in the tying run and Jennifer Raworth put Villa Park ahead with an RBI single in the sixth and Villa Park won the consolation championship. Raworth went three for three and had two RBIs.

In nonleague softball:

Garden Grove 3-2, Marina 1-4--Trailing 2-1, visiting Marina gained the split by scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth as Garden Grove walked two and committed three errors. Marina pitcher Janet Miyahara struck out 10.

Canyon 15-11, Los Amigos 0-0 (both games five innings, mercy rule)--Canyon’s Sara Roberts pitched a perfect game in the season opener for both teams. Teammate Karen Jacobs pitched a one-hitter in the second game, allowing only a first-inning infield single.

Trabuco Hills 3, Ocean View 1 (eight innings)--Brianna Burkman of Trabuco Hills had a perfect game with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning. But an error extended the game, and Ocean View’s first hit tied it. Burkman got a one-hit victory, however, as Ocean View errors helped Trabuco Hills score twice in the eighth inning.

In nonleague baseball:

Mater Dei 7-0, Capo Valley 5-1--Mater Dei broke a 1-1 tie in the first game with a run in the fifth inning and then scored five in the sixth inning at UC Irvine. In the second game, Capistrano Valley’s Travis Burgus pitched a two hitter and struck out seven, including Shawn Wyns looking with two outs in the final inning and runners on second and third.

Valencia 3, Pacifica 0--After Scott Wilson hit a two-run home run in the third inning, host Valencia led, 3-0. Steve Rewald allowed three hits in five innings and Eric Petzoldt pitched the final two innings and struck out the side in the seventh.

Woodbridge 1-6, Rancho Alamitos 0-4--In the first game, Jeff Qrizos pitched a four-hit shut out for Woodbridge and Brian Osterode pitched a two-hitter for host Rancho Alamitos.

Saddleback 6-10, Sunny Hills 5-5--In the second game at Sunny Hills, Saddleback scored eight runs in the first inning to run away with the victory. In the first game, however, Sunny Hills (1-2) scored once in the bottom of the seventh inning to close to 6-5 before Saddleback pitcher Ralph Cedillo threw out the potential tying run at the plate for the final out.

In the El Segundo baseball tournament:

Edison 8, Simi Valley 3--Josh Gingrich (1-0) pitched a complete-game victory and gave Edison a 5-0 lead with a two-run single in the fifth inning in a second round game.

Brea 7, Westminster 6 (10 innings)--Chad Marlow doubled and Brian Trazaglia drove Marlow home with a single in the top of the 10th inning for the second-round victory.
