Harbour Quits as Camarillo Coach

John Harbour, boys’ basketball coach at Camarillo High for nine of the past 10 seasons, resigned Wednesday citing burnout.
Harbour, whose son David was the leading scorer in the Valley area this season, will continue to teach math at Camarillo. Harbour’s record was 147-71, and he led his teams to four Marmonte League championships.
“I’m going to relax and enjoy watching David play,” said Harbour, whose son will be a senior in the fall. “I’m not deriving as much pleasure from the victories as I used to. I agonize over the losses and, when we win, I just feel relieved.”
Harbour, 41, indicated that David, who averaged 27.7 points a game, will feel less pressure playing for a coach other than his father.
“I want him to enjoy his senior year,” Harbour said. “When I’m coaching, I’m watching his every move. He’s always under pressure. He’s caught between his teammates and the coach. In some ways, he’ll play better without me on the bench.
“I like our relationship off the court better than on the court.”
A successor has not been named.
“I hope it’s a young guy eager to spend the time and do a good job,” Harbour said.
