COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Garcia Leads Chapman to 8-5 Victory in Baseball

Jody Garcia had three hits and three runs batted in to lead Chapman College to an 8-5 victory over Cal Poly Pomona in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. baseball game Saturday.

Doug Yates hit a solo home run in the sixth inning and Rod Kopfler had two hits and an RBI for Chapman (11-9, 3-4 in conference).

Pomona is 6-16, 3-8.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Southern California College 8-5, Point Loma Nazarene 0-1--Jim Dedrick allowed three hits, struck out 11 and walked none to lead host Southern California College (10-8-1, 3-1) in the first game. Kendall Casper had two hits and three RBIs to lead SCC in the first game. In the second game, which was only scheduled to go seven innings, Ralph Garcia had a no-hitter until the seventh inning. He ended up allowing three hits and striking out eight. In the second game, Brett Howard had two hits and three RBIs and Joe Aversa had a hit, an RBI and scored a run.

In nonconference softball:

Christ College Irvine 11-8, Loyola Marymount 0-0--Michele Vail struck out six and allowed three hits and Lisa Merenda went three for three and had an RBI in the first game for Christ College Irvine (10-7). In the second game, Merenda pitched a two-hitter.

In Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. men’s volleyball:

UC Irvine 3, Brigham Young 0--David Pettker had 15 kills and seven digs to lead UC Irvine to a 15-11, 15-12, 15-9 victory over visiting Brigham Young (3-10, 1-7 in conference). Also for Irvine, which improved to 4-10 overall, 1-10 in conference, Steve Florentine had 13 kills and eight digs.

In nonconference women’s tennis:

Cal State Fullerton 7, New Mexico State 2--Rosanne Alva led Cal State Fullerton by defeating Chrissy Edwards, 6-1, 6-1, in singles and teaming with Kelly Moore in doubles to defeat Lissette Balbiers and Vivian Stovall, 6-0, 6-0. Colleen Duigman and Caroline Sporer defeated Edwards and Jennifer Azaniz, 6-1, 6-0. Fullerton is 6-7.
