HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Mira Mesa Pounds Out a 15-6 Victory

Mira Mesa had 22 hits in its 15-6 victory over host Patrick Henry in the City Eastern League opener Tuesday. Mira Mesa jumped to a 10-2 lead after scoring five runs in both the first and second innings. Marc Nielsen went four for four with two doubles and three RBIs for undefeated Mira Mesa (1-0, 9-0). Teammate Drew Arnold went three for six with a double and two RBIs. Also for Mira Mesa, Jaime Escamilla had three RBIs on one hit and Beau Champoux went two for three with two RBIs.

In the other City Eastern game:

Point Loma 2, Morse 0--John Gabrian went two for three including a double and one RBI for Point Loma (1-0, 4-4). Point Loma’s Mel Shonely (2-1) allowed two hits. Morse is now 0-1, 4-4.

City Harbor League

Clairemont 6, Marian Catholic 3--Beto Martinez hit a two-run homer in the third inning for Marian (0-1, 3-1) to close the gap to 4-3, but Clairemont scored two runs in the sixth. Martinez went two for three with two RBIs. Jesus Jauergui went two for two with a double, triple, one RBI and two runs scored for Clairemont (1-0, 5-3).

Coronado 7, St. Augustine 3--Scott Dickerson hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to give Coronado a 4-1 lead. Joel Franklin went two for three with two RBIs for the Islanders. Dan McGehee went two for three with an RBI and a run scored for host St. Augustine (1-6, 0-1).

City Western League

USDHS 5, Kearny 2--Kearny (0-1, 5-4) had five errors contributing to USDHS’s runs, which were all unearned. Pitcher Gavin Millay went two for four for USDHS.

University City 4, Mission Bay 2--Troy Lane hit a two-run single in the fourth winning for University City (1-0, 4-3). Mission Bay is 0-1, 1-6.

City Central League

Crawford 7, Madison 4--Crawford scored all seven runs in the first two innings as Todd Davis contributed two RBIs going two for three. Teammate Sal Vidrios went two for three and also had the game-winning RBI. Pitcher Chris Townsend (3-0) struck out nine. Crawford is 6-1, 1-0 and Madison is 3-5, 0-1.

San Diego 13, Lincoln 2--Pitcher Claudio Moreno went the distance and struck out seven. He was also the offensive hero with four RBIs, a double and a home run. Terry Martin homered for Lincoln (4-4).

Nonleague

Grossmont 7, Southwest 6--Grossmont (10-0), considered by some the county’s best team, had to overcome a 5-1 deficit after one inning to claim the victory. The game was called after five innings because of darkness. Todd Cady starred for Grossmont by going two for four and driving in two runs. Southwest fell to 2-6.

Carlsbad 2, El Cajon Valley 0--Regan Harris hit a bases-loaded single collecting the two RBIs for Carlsbad (5-5). Carlsbad’s Geoff Stadnyk (4-1) struck out eight, walked three and allowed six hits.

La Jolla 4, Serra 3--La Jolla went ahead for good in the fourth after back-to-back RBI doubles from Eric Vann and Brad Kirn. The Vikings had tied the game in the third on Gary Frank’s two-run homer.

Escondido 7, San Dieguito 0--Escondido pitcher Brian Klungreseter went seven innings for the shutout. He struck out nine and allowed only three hitters to reach base. Klungreseter allowed only one hit and he hit a batter. Another player reached base on an error. Tom Afenir hit a two-run homer in the third.

Torrey Pines 8, Valhalla 5--Scott Gunther had two hits for Torrey Pines, including a two-run triple in the sixth that knocked in the game-winning run. Teammate Anthony Napoli, the designated hitter, went two for three with three RBIs and Britton Scheibe was two for four with one RBI. Torrey Pines improved to 4-3.

Monte Vista 14, Mar Vista 2--Starting pitcher Vern Mullis (1-1) helped his own cause going two for four with a home run--his third--with two RBIs and three runs scored for Monte Vista (7-2). Teammate Neal Svalstad was two for three with three runs and two RBIs.

Hoover 16, Christian 8--D.C. Jacobs hit a two-run homer to key Hoover’s seven-run first inning. Tony Banks went four for five with two RBIs and four runs scored for Hoover (2-6). Also for Hoover, Levi McLaurin went two for four with two RBIs and Kevin Taylor went two for three with two RBIs.

San Pasqual 8, Milwaukie, Ore. 2--Chris Hancock had two hits and two RBIs and Ben Duncan went two for two for San Pasqual (2-5-1).
